Quick Tip #7: Mix Up Rhythms

Watch the video to hear my quick tip number 7, which is all about mixing up rhythms in your solos.

It’s great to play quavers in your improvisation, they add stability. But, to add some interest and creative flair, you could try including a mix of different rhythms.

There are loads of ways to think about this and practice it. There are Hemeolas, for example playing a 3/4 time phrase over 4/4 time. There are different note groupings you can play with, like 5-note phrases or 3-note phrases. There are set rhythms you can play with. And don’t forget you’ve got quaver triplets, crotchet triplets, crotchets, 5:2, 7:2 etc. to practice with and mix in to your solos.

So there’s loads to work with! I hope you’ve enjoyed this little quick tip, and it’s given you something to think about next time you practice or play.
